Interns from 2004 program

Here is what students from summer 2004 said about their OHIP internship:

Nursing Student:

“The OHIP internship gave me the opportunity to spend the summer with workers, unions and community health clinics, learning about workplace hazards in a way that helped me better understand the impacts of certain social conditions - like low wages - on workplace health and safety. My experience was instrumental in solidifying my decision to apply to the Occupational and Environmental Health Nurse Practitioner program at UCSF."   Medical Student:

“This internship confirmed my interest in occupational health. I was greatly inspired by the need to treat and document health injuries and strengthen worker protections. One aspect I find particularly interesting about occupational health is the need to work within social and political frameworks to address health concerns.”

Industrial Hygiene Student:

"The OHIP program gave me the opportunity to apply my background in Industrial Hygiene in a real construction environment. It was very important to interact with the workers to succeed on a project that requires identification, evaluation and control of risk factors in the work place. I can frankly say that the program changed my opinion toward labor unions in a positive way. I gained a better understanding with regard to their organization and rights and the obstacles to be overcome when fighting for better work conditions.”

Undergraduate Student:

“A major strength of OHIP is that is allows undergrad students like myself to be able to get their feet wet and then decide if this is an area of interest to them. I know it is for me.”

Interdisciplinary Team:

“Because of our summer experience, all three of us are committed to working in the field of occupational health, a field that is at the intersection of health care, public health, as well as economic, political, and environmental justice.”

“Being part of an interdisciplinary team reassured me that two heads are better than one when you want to come up with good solutions that favor workers' health. I highly recommend this program to those looking for an opportunity to learn about labor unions and use their knowledge to benefit workers' conditions."
