Clinic Description
Cook County Hospital Occupational Medicine Clinic is located in the
northeast corner of the state of Illinois. The clinical services
provided by the Clinic include diagnosis and treatment of patients
suffering from a wide variety of occupational and environmental
diseases, poisonings, and exposures to hazardous substances. Carpal
tunnel syndrome, repetitive trauma, lead intoxication, silicosis,
asbestosis, coal workers pneumoconiosis, occupational asthma and
pesticide poisonings are examples of problems addressed by the Clinic
staff. The services include not only traditional diagnostic assessments
and plans, but also determinations of work relatedness of disease,
worker education regarding protection from hazards, and detailed
reports/testimonies to assist patients in obtaining insurance benefits,
compensation, etc. Lead exposure continues to be the major
environmental concern.
Added in 1999, the Great Lakes Center for Children's Environmental Health is one of nine Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Units in North America. Consultation and clinical evaluation is provided for children from infancy through adolescence who have known or suspected, acute or chronic environmental exposures. Such exposures include, but are not limited to: lead, mercury, arsenic and pesticides. In addition, to the multidisciplinary staff of the occupational medicine clinic, a pediatrician evaluates each child who presents to clinic.
